Ugh, it happened again.
Another week or month has passed.
You’ve wanted to add those finishing touches and wondered how you should go about it, but you’ve made no progress.

If your a beginner or homeowner struggling to find a way to to create something that is beautiful and lasting. Well there is nothing that can beat the traditional look of a coffered ceiling and adding wainscoting to your walls. All it really takes is simple primed boards and some mouldings, and you can have that formal, elegant touch your looking for.

The supplies I used for this coffered ceiling were 3/4” plywood to create nailer board strips and ceiling cleats, 1”x8” and 1”x6” primed pine boards for the boxes and then crown and bead mouldings to add the finishing touches on the ceiling and walls.

First, I started with measuring the ceiling for the layout. Once the pattern was confirmed, I marked the locations for the main beams and crossbeams. I also decided to add a perimeter beam to create a more elegant look. After snapping lines, I installed plywood nailer boards directly to the ceiling and walls by applying construction adhesive and nailing them at every joist.

Once the nailer boards were completed, I created strong box beams and crossbeams. After carefully measuring the lengths I needed, I cut them so they would fit and installed the beams and crossbeams on the ceiling using the nailer boards I had previously applied.

After the coffered boxes were made, I installed crown moulding snugly between each box and added an additional bead moulding detail to the bottom on each box.

To add some finishing touches I added upper columns to the mantel and a three piece chair rail with some shadow boxes made with moulding in a picture frame.

The mouldings were applied directly to the wall. After filling all nail holes and sanding the surfaces smooth, I primed and painted the trim work and walls to create this simple yet beautiful look.
