Here is a rustic beam for a fireplace mantle. This rough-hewn timber added some rustic warmth and character to an old farmhouse fireplace.

I first installed some solid blocking so I could anchor six, 10′ long x 5/8” lag bolts to support the beam.

I plastered the wall smooth and gave it a couple of coats of paint.

I installed the lag bolts in the proper location and cut off the heads.

I then copied the pattern onto he back side of the mantel, drilled the holes and then slid the beam into place.
