This job was to replace a handicap ramp and add a roof deck for a stone patio. To do that I used the Silca System.
As a contractor I am always looking for smart and innovative ways to perform my job. The Silca System uses a 100% Recycled engineered polycarbonate grate. The grates are made in a honey-cone hexagon pattern to create a super-strong subfloor in order to sustain the stone. It also allows water to drain freely and provides plenty of airflow to assist with ventilation. The Silca Grates are attached with 3” coated exterior deck screws to a standard pressure treated deck.

It is important that joists are installed plumb. Any high spot will need to be shaved down to provide a flat surface to lay down the paving material. To do that I used a straight edge and laid it across the deck joists and any high spots or crowns I found where then shaved down. I used my electric planer which allowed me to level the rough lumber until it was flat and smooth.

Next, I installed a thin rubber self-adhesive joist tape (rubber membrane) to all the tops of the timber joists. This was to protect the pressure treated deck joists from water and dirt debris which would eventually lead to a rotted joist.

I then attached the Silca Grates using 3” exterior coated deck screws through the 4 to 6 holes provided on the grates. I secured the grates onto the deck joists in a staggering pattern to provide extra strength.

You will need to install a lip around the perimeter of the deck to hold the stone in place. You can either install a pressure treated timber, trim boards or use stone.

For high traffic areas I framed the joists 8” on center

I cut the Silca Grates with a table saw and multi purpose tool. The grates were quick and easy to install. Now the roof deck ready to receive the stone paving materials to create the pattern you like.

If your interested in a stone deck, consider using the SilcaGrate System for your project.
