Just before Christmas I was able to build a beautiful custom wood mantle. The inspiration was to make the large living room a more warm and cozy space for the holidays and to be enjoyed all year-round.

I first sized the mantel to fit the fireplace and found the mouldings and trim that would match the profile that the customer wanted. After prepping the walls, solid granite was installed to the fireplace surrounds and hearth.

Next I made the mantel legs and breastplate out of ¾-inch Birch plywood. It was layered with raised columns and wrapped with various moldings and plinth blocks.

The breastplate was fitted with decorative carvings and topped with a two piece crown detail and shelf, finished off with a band moulding. All the finish nail holes were filled. The piece was primed with oil base primer and then sanded before painting the entire mantel.

To secure it properly to the fireplace surround, I created a cleat system that locked it in firmly in place.

Whether your living space is large or small I hope this custom wood mantel inspires you to add those cozy finishing touches to your fireplace!
