There are different ways to make floating shelves, but the appeal for sturdy floating shelves is that there is no visible brackets or hardware. Check out how I made some easy floating shelves:

I wanted to use some thick lumber so I started with 8/4 x 10 Hard White Maple
I cut the pieces from the 8/4 x 10 boards, which was about 24″ long for this project
Next, I drill pressed some holes for the stainless steel dowels I made out of some long 1/4″ stainless steel bolts
If you don’t have a drill press you can make a simple guide for your drill like the one pictured here
The holes are all drilled and ready for the stainless steel dowels
Next, I ripped about 1″ off of each board on the table saw and then used epoxy to fasten the stainless dowels into the smaller piece of each shelf that I just ripped on the table saw
I then sanded the boards and cleaned them for stain and sealer
After the sealer had dried they were ready to install with screws into studs. Once level and plumb I slid the larger board with holes over the smaller piece with dowels for a sturdy and attractive shelf.
Finished and ready for use
